Kindle Fire With Snow

“As soon go kindle fire with snow,

as seek to quench the fire of love with words.”

In January of 2003 my mom and I packed our bags and moved away from our home in Arizona.

We drove for a few days before arriving in Minnesota.

We rolled into a petite, perfect looking town called Chaska. Old, rust colored brick buildings lined the town’s quaint little streets. Large trees gathered around several snow-covered lakes; frozen in sweet time. Much nicer than my dusty, colorless home in Arizona. Except one thing…..

Snow.

Having lived in a desert my whole life, I’d only ever seen snow a few times. If snow is what you’d call it.. It was more like wet powdered sugar. But this stuff was definitely snow, and there was a lot of it. Sure it was beautiful, but with snow, came the cold. The cold and I did not mix, and we still don’t.

My third day in this cold place also happened to be my first day in a Minnesota school. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong.

The school counselor gave me a tour, showed me my very first locker, introduced me to my teachers, and set me free to learn. She asked me to meet her after school so she could escort me to my bus so I would be able to make it home safely. Now, I had no idea how to find my way around town, literally no clue. I made sure to move as quickly as possible to get back to her so we could make it to the bus on time. Just my luck, I make it to her office and she informs me that I can’t take a bus because I live to close to the school.. Great. Walking out the front door of the school I am greeted with the beginnings of a blizzard. On my way home, I got lost for over an hour… By the time I made back to our apartment I had frost bite on my ears, and the fear of going back to school was overwhelming.

Eventually I learned to deal with the snow, and I made new friends, amazing friends. Some of which I’ve been friends with for 10 years now. They showed me how to have fun, and they showed me the beauty of the city. The old buildings that make up the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) are covered with art; paintings of Minnesota’s heart and soul. This is one of the many reasons I am constantly drawn back to this place.

Another reason I love it here is because it’s so full of life. Nature is abundant, even in the middle of the cities. You can go down many of the walking trails for ten minutes and feel like you’re deep in a vibrant, green forest. No dusty deserts around here! Yay!!

During the spring and summer my camera is practically glued to my face. I spend a lot of time chasing butterflies, birds, and any other animal I can find. Always trying to capture that one moment in time where I felt in awe of the beauty surrounding me. There are a lot of those moments here. Perfection is almost the right word for it, if it didn’t snow so much!
